Rally at RBC’s AGM

At RBC’s Annual General Meeting hundreds of protesters rallied outside to demand RBC stop financing climate disasters.  Representatives of the Wet’suwet’en and other Indigenous groups and land defenders confronted RBC leaders on the destruction of their lands and abuse of indigenous rights. RBC advised their shareholders to vote against any climate resolutions. As the delegates left the conference centre they were greeted by hundreds of supporters, including Pax Christi members,  gathered outside in the rain to show their solidarity.

Post note: Since the rallies against RBC, a report by Corporate Knights indicates that the protests have had some effect. Despite some doubt concerning their intentions to meet these obligations, the RBC concessions include:

1. publishing the bank’s ratio of renewable energy financing to fossil fuel financing (now becoming a leading indicator to pension funds)

2.  tripling its renewable energy financing to $15 BB by 2030

3.  an audit of the bank’s Indigenous and racial community practices.
